Now I`m sure you can all recall, when Roman Abramovich took over Chelsea Football Club, lock, stock and barrel, a certain accusation was made.

The inference coming from the media and supporters of almost every other club was that Chelsea had bought the league.

It`s often forgotten that when it came to strengthen the team, prior to Abramovich taking over, the clubs finances were in such a perilous position that only Quique de Lucas was added to the squad in the last season before the Russian took over.

Sure, with money available Claudio Ranieri was like a kid in a sweet shop, grabbing everything he could. But people forget that, previously, the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool used to purchase with almost the same gay abandon.

I can recall when it seemed that Manchester United bought players just to stop other clubs from signing them. As for Liverpool, backed by the Moores` family who controlled a football pools empire, the club was never short of money.

These days, although some would say some clubs are flouting the rules, the Financial Fair Play agreement ensures that clubs have to strike a balance between expenditure and revenue.

But, continuing on money matters, an important fact came to light this weekend.

Up at Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho fielded a side that beat Leicester City 2-0 who had a combined price-tag of in excess of £400 million, a Premier League record.

Now who do you think is buying the title?
