In our latest poll we asked you to vote for your favourite midfield trio.
In all honesty, there really was never any doubt as to which three would be selected. A point not lost on Dean Thompson a supporter of a certain North London club who e-mailed me stating it was blatantly obvious and that an article I hadn?t actually written was, to put it in English, rubbish. Next time Dean a few less obscenities might suffice but thanks for the communication anyway.
The winners in our poll amassing 49% of the vote were the preferred midfield three of Makelele, Lampard and Essien However, in second place and somewhat contradicting the claim of Dean Thompson were Makelele, Lampard and Gudjohnsen with 35% of the vote.
This would seem to indicate that whilst Makelele and Lampard are viewed as the essential ingredients in the midfield engine room, opinion was slightly split as to whether the extraordinary running, tackling and energy of Essien was preferred to the ingenuity and sublime passing skills of Gudjohnsen
With Gudjohnsen apparently set to further his career elsewhere, this emphasises the loss he?ll be to the current squad.
The remainder of the voting for the other four options was minimal with the trio of Diarra, Lampard and Maniche picking up 6% of the vote, the trio of Diarra, Lampard and Essien picking up 4% of the vote and the trio?s of Makelele, Lampard and Maniche and Maniche, Lampard and Essien polling a meagre 3% of the vote each.
Therefore in our quest to select the first eleven of 2005-2006 we now have seven players ? Ferreira, Terry, Gallas, Bridge, Makelele, Lampard, Essien.
Now it?s turn to move onto the front line.
