The news that Denis Wise and Gus Poyet are to take over the managerial reins at Leeds United has left us all pondering the strange quirks of fate that seem to populate football.

Eyebrows were raised when Ken Bates bought into the once powerful giant. Here we had the ex-chairman of Chelsea now becoming the major player at a team that had a strong rivalry with us. Now it would seem that this little province in Yorkshire fast resembles an ex-Chelsea stronghold.

Already, the sceptics in the tabloids are suggesting that the flat-cap brigade will be reluctant to accept the latest invasion by those that wore the blue of SW6. Indeed, recent comments would add weight to the old saying, there`s nowt as queer as folk. However, back down south amongst the sprawling metropolis that is Southern England, opinion is equally divided.

Whilst many are wishing Denis luck in his new venture, others are suggesting that our ex-captain must have either lost his marbles in joining Leeds or have been enticed by a fat monthly cheque. Strangely enough, many pundits don`t seem too surprised that Poyet has joined one of our deadliest rivals. Perhaps it`s because he first showed signs of betrayal by moving to N17 when he left Chelsea.

However, I`m firmly with the small band of Chelsea supporters that hope that Denis has been swayed from his original decision not to risk his good-relationship with Ken Bates by taking the Leeds job for one reason and one reason alone. That is to lead them to the promised land – the third tier of English football.

Wouldn`t that be just wonderful?
