Chelsea head off to North London on Wednesday to face Arsenal in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup. Coming off the back of a fine win over Brighton & Hove Albion, that saw Antonio Conte revert back to last season`s favoured 3-4-3 formation, Chelsea can head to the Emirates bursting with confidence.

This season, particularly against the stronger teams, Conte has switched to a 3-5-2 system that utilises Alvaro Morata as a lone striker with Eden Hazard playing just behind him. The downfall of that system, comes from the resulting midfield. With five players in there, the two holding players stifle Chelsea`s attacking abilities.

Recent games have produced consistent form from the back three, whoever has played. As Conte has said, despite a constant barrage of criticism, Chelsea are unbeaten in 12 games in all competitions. As it stands, they remain in both domestic cups and have reached the round of 16 in the Champions League.

If Conte has a fault though, it`s his belief, that this use of the five man midfield is his best option against the so called ‘big teams`. Alvaro Morata has struggled in his role at the head of Chelsea`s attack.

We saw against Brighton, how having three players in attack benefited the whole team. Hazard, Batshuayi and Willian linked well and were involved in three of the goals. In particular Batshuayi showed a strength on the ball that Morata has lacked.

Come Wednesday evening, and with a chance to get to the seasons first final, Conte must retain the 3-4-3 formation. Arsenal aren`t in great form, although they do seem able to raise their game against us, but Chelsea can defeat them.

Conte must accept that Morata is badly lacking confidence and wildly out of form. From what was displayed yesterday at the Amex, Batshuayi is suffering neither. He needs a run in the team and the Italian must give him that time.

Morata will come good. But for now, he needs time out to reassess his game and reboot his mindset. The Spanish triumvirate of Fabregas, Pedro, and Morata were all missing yesterday, and Chelsea flourished.

It`s time Conte put aside all this nonsense about tiredness and focus more on playing a team of players willing to fight for the jersey. We saw that in spades yesterday and a repeat of that performance and that attitude will see Chelsea in the final of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

  • One player I wouldn’t want to see against Arsenal is Fabrigas. We have struggled against Arsenal whenever Fabrigas is featured.

  • Agreed that Morata needs to be on the bench for now. Arsenal have long figured out the 3-4-3 formation, fact is we never beat them using that system. I remember some members here saying Conte has never beaten Wenger in a competitive match as if that’s gonna be a trophy won. Nonetheless what we need is more of stamina, character, hunger & desire from the blast of the whistle till the end. I watched as Norwich nearly got result against us home & away. What did they do special? Nothing, just little bit of stamina/bit of never die attitude & press us relentlessly. So who are the players that have such character to impose themselves on games and refuse to be intimidated or dominated by the opposition, most especially midfield as there is where games are won & lost? KTBFFH!!!

  • The way forward should be signing players that have those qualities, not lazy ones please. I like the transfer link of that lad Richarlison of Watford FC. I like Zaha as well but don’t like what i see in RLC for example. I also like the shift put in by Bakayoko against Brighton and if together with Kante or DD/Barkley/Scott will give us such consistent performance like that, I think we will be alright in midfield. KTBFFH!!!

  • I 100% agree with you @techlec…, it’s time to focus on getting the best out of the players we have and stop this nonsense about tiredness, squad is thin, etc. Even with Cahill, Pedro, Morata, Cesc, Courtois and DD all unavailable yesterday, we still manage to field a strong starting xi and a bench that had players like Luiz, Zappacosta, Ross Barkley and Musonda. For me, I don’t get why we’re running after Emerson when we have Kenedy who imo is more than capable and as good as Emerson. Plus, this Emerson guy has been injured for long and is just getting back to form…

  • Kennedy is not a left wing back and can probably never be. Emerson will do better. Kennedy needs to go on loan to get more playing time. He’s better as an attacking wing back and could dislodge Pedro next season.

  • I like the unity of opinion expressed here. Against arsenal Fabregas should not be made to start. He lacks fighting spirit. Moreover, if my memory serves me right we have only beaten arsenal once when Fabregas played.

  • I do not subscribe to the idea of Bats replacing Morata against arsenal. Morata needs his form and confidence back and he can’t get them sitting on the bench. Moreover he’s hold up play is better than that of Bats.

  • I hope we start Bats, Morata can start against Newcastle, and i think Bats will come good if we give him a run .I do agree no Fab or Pedro. We need some warriors on that pitch, not these guys that do not show up every game .I think Fab and Pedro could use some rest .

  • Morata Should Sit On The Bench And Watch How Batsman Will Handle The Physical Tussle With Kolscieny And That German Thug Mustafi. Anything Otherwise And We Will Be Left Frustrated With A Big Number That Can’t Stay On His Feet To Save His Life.
