Last night, Bayer Leverkusen’s exit from the Europa League, at the quarter-final stage at the hands of Inter Milan, could finally see Chelsea snare the midfielder they’ve been linked to for the last couple of months.
The player in question is, of course, Kai Havertz who, once again, showed his prowess as a goalscoring midfielder by scoring Leverkusen’s consolation goal in their defeat.
According to The Sun, however, one thing that has yet to be settled is the size of the transfer fee.
Our quoted source is inferring that the Bundesliga outfit are holding out for a mammoth £90 million which, I believe, is some £20 million more than Chelsea have offered.
One way forward, as advocated by The Daily Mail, is for the two clubs to agree to a staggered payment plan, although if they are to lose their prize asset, we’d expect Leverkusen to want a huge chunk of the fee paid upfront.
Hopefully, this is a deal that Chelsea can get across the line as they seek to close the gap, next season, between themselves and the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.
