Chelsea’s Lampard Confirms Who His First Choice Keeper Is

|

Last night, as Chelsea began their 2020 / 2021 Champions league campaign, with a home fixture against Sevilla, we witnessed a tactical game that ended goalless.

After the recent glut of goals conceded, keeping a clean sheet with a defence that contained three of the summer signings, Mendy, Chilwell and Silva, was a major positive point.

Indeed, the clean sheet came courtesy of a fantastic save from Edouardo Mendy who showed his top-notch reactions in keeping out a header from Nemanja Gudeji that deflected off Kurt Zouma.

It would seem that from the performances Mendy has given in the games he has played, he has already established himself as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper, something Frank Lampard was keen to emphasise, as reported by The BBC, in his after-match interview with Frank remarking after being asked if Mendy was his #1:

“At the moment, yes. He’s shown his quality.

“The way he’s played, he’s played very well, that’s two clean sheets for him already.

“As it stands, he is the number one but that’s always up for grabs. But the way he’s playing I’m very happy.”

As we all are, Mendy has a physical presence about him that Arrizabalaga currently lacks and with a difficult trip to Old Trafford coming up this weekend, I am glad the Senegalese international is fit again.
