Mourinho and his First Relegation Dogfight – II

When I wrote here on Tuesday that Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was involved in a relegation scrap – something entirely alien to him as he finds his Chelsea side precariously close to the murky waters of relegation for the first time in his rather stellar career – a visiting Vital Manchester United member thought I was overreacting and exaggerating.

Alas, how I wish I was! Fastforward four days later, and Chelsea are still in 15th place on the log, albeit -3 points closer to the dreaded drop zone, after succumbing to a 3-1 home loss to Liverpool on Saturday – a sixth loss in the first 11 games of the campaign which now sees the champions 14 points adrift of joint leaders Man City and Arsenal. Yes, Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal of course.

Now whilst the likes of Gary Lineker have had their turns poking fun at Chelsea’s expense on social media Twitter when he tweeted: “Don’t panic Chelsea fans. No team in @premierleague history has won the title and been relegated the following season.”, it goes without saying that such jeering assurances do little or nothing to inspire confidence in the Blue faithful, especially not when the self-styled Special One reportedly has “nothing to say”, and perhaps do, about this unprecedented full-blown meltdown we are currently having to deal with.

I wanted to title this “Adeus Senhor Mourinho“, but decided against it lest I be accused by a segment of the faithful of all but preempting one Roman Abramovich, or worse still, heresy.

Nevertheless, with a real relegation threat staring us menacingly in the face as yet another fixture, this time in the Premier League, looms away at Stoke City’s Brittania Stadium next weekend, what are the chances that Mourinho can or will even be the one to steer us away from danger, considering that he knows next to, erm, ahem, nothing about fighting relegation inasmuch as another loss to The Potters will certainly see us sink beneath the embarrassing 15th position on the log?
