Ross Barkley is due to resume full training with the Chelsea squad next week. The former Everton midfielder arrived at Chelsea in January carrying a hamstring injury that has been slow to heal.

After a brief spell in the team, there was another problem with it that returned him to the physio room. According to The Telegraph there`s a chance Barkley could still play some part in Chelsea`s season.

Despite having a plethora of central midfielders, none really match the quality provided by N`golo Kante. There`s is an opening for the 24-year-old if he can regain his fitness. Chelsea have a maximum of ten games left to play this season.

If he can play some small part in helping his teammates achieve an FA cup win or probably more crucially a Champions League spot, he`ll have gone a long way to repaying that £15m transfer fee. With some Everton fans laughing at his ‘injury crisis` he still has time to silence those taunts before the season ends.

If that fails, it’s all down to the managerial gods. With the possibility of someone new at the Chelsea helm, he’ll have another manager to try and impress. It seems extremely unlikely he’ll be heading off to Russia this summer.

So, if he can go into the break fit, and he gets a good pre-season in, he still has a chance. Then next season those Everton fans may well be laughing on the other side of their faces when he goes up to Goodison Park and bangs in a couple of goals. That has to be his target.
