With two minutes to go at Swansea, on Wednesday, Tottenham’s bid to win the Premier League was dead and buried – a goal later, two more in added time as well, and Spurs welcome Watford to White Hart Lane for the lunchtime kick off on Saturday aiming for a sixth straight win to close within four points of Chelsea, albeit temporarily. However, the Hornets have found some form and are after a third win in a row.
Manchester City’s defeat at Chelsea extended the winless run to four games. That ended City’s outside chances of winning the Premier League with the focus now on finishing in the top four. Hull go to the Etihad Stadium knowing a third straight win – fourth in five – would ensure they stay outside of the bottom three.
Second bottom Middlesbrough haven’t won in the last 10 with a Riverside Stadium victory over Burnley a must if Boro are to have any chance of Premier League survival. The Clarets’ first win in eight, against Stoke on Tuesday, moved them closer to safety.
A first win in five for Stoke, beaten for a third time in a row in midweek, against Liverpool would boost the Potters’ chances of finishing in the top 10. The Reds head to the bet365 Stadium third and unbeaten in five – six points clear of Arsenal, fifth.
Eighth place West Brom might only be a place ahead of Southampton but they hold a seven point advantage meaning Albion should be well placed to finish in this position. However, a Saints win at the Hawthorns and the battle is on.
West Ham are very much in relegation form as a fifth successive defeat, when beaten at Arsenal on Wednesday, extended the winless run to seven – the Hammers are just five points above Swansea, who dropped into the final relegation spot after a late Tottenham comeback, in this massive six pointer at the London Stadium.
A late equaliser at Liverpool extended Bournemouth’s unbeaten run to five – the Cherries’ next challenge comes from Premier League leaders Chelsea. Should Tottenham win, earlier in the day, the Blues will look for a win to restore their seven points advantage.
Bottom side Sunderland, 10 points from safety, play host to Manchester United on Sunday. The Black Cats quite simply have to win or the slim chances of survival basically end – United also need to points as they battle for a top four finish.
Everton’s European hopes were dealt a blow when Manchester United denied them three points at Old Trafford with an added time equaliser. Leicester, pushing for a top 10 finish, would virtually end the Toffees bid if they made it six Premier League wins on the spin.
With a four game winning run ended, Crystal Palace play host to Arsenal in Monday’s London derby at Selhurst Park. Palace go into this weekend three points clear of relegation danger but could potentially be goal difference alone above it by the time the Gunners, four points off the top four, visit.
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
