The news that Dennis Wise has agreed to return to management should be viewed as good news for the game.

After having previously been in charge of Millwall and having taken them to the FA Cup Final, Dennis was surprisingly shown the door by the South London side. However, a spell last season, as a player, with Coventry City saw Dennis develop into something of a striker with the highest goals per game ratio of his career.

However, he’ll always retain a place in our hearts for his never-say-die attitude in our blue shirt and the fact that he is, currently, our most successful captain in terms of silverware, although a certain John Terry may confine that to the history books.

Taking charge at Swindon will be, to say the least, a challenge for Dennis and it’s interesting that he has enlisted the help of another ex-Chelsea player, Gus Poyet. The Uruguayan, although he blotted his copybook signing for Spurs, remains another who experienced success at Chelsea and it’ll be interesting to see how Gus develops as a coach.

Both have signed relatively long-term contracts as they seek to drag Swindon out of the lowest domestic division. Interestingly, both have also registered as player in case the relatively thin Swindon squad is stretched beyond limits through injuries next season.

Dennis recently remarked that he has no qualms about taking his side to play Accrington Stanley on an icy evening. However, we suspect that come the draw for either the Carling or FA Cups, Dennis will be secretly hoping that his Swindon side are paired with Chelsea.

I doubt whether I’ll be the only Chelsea fan who’ll seek out Swindon’s results next season and I’m sure I’m not alone in wishing Dennis and Gus all the best in their new roles, unless off course they do draw us in either domestic cup.
